How to Become a Merit Badge Counselor
Interested in becoming a counselor? Follow these simple steps:
1️⃣ Complete Youth Protection (YPT) & Merit Badge Counselor Training – Available at My.Scouting.org. Print and submit proof of completion.
2️⃣ Submit a BSA Adult Leader Application – Complete and submit a new adult application with the position listed as “Merit Badge Counselor” (Code 42).
3️⃣ Fill Out the Merit Badge Counselor Information Form – Indicate which merit badges you want to teach and your qualifications.
4️⃣ Submit All Paperwork – Turn in your forms to your Troop Merit Badge Coordinator, District Executive, or the Council office for processing.

Additional Notes
No Cost to Register – Serving as a merit badge counselor is free, even if you are only registered in this role.
Stay Current – Youth Protection Training (YPT) must be renewed every two years. Failure to do so may result in removal from the counselor list.
